1 Ewhurst Road - A Butchery Since 1908

Oliver Khaldi of Peckham is the new butcher in residence – having picked up the mantel from longstanding owner Peter James in July this year. With the support of the The Proud Sow family (see below) Oli is dedicated to maintaining the traditions of a proud independent local butcher.

The Proud Sow Family story:

Oli: Eight years ago Oli's passion for food led him to pursue the art of butchery. Later with the support of family friends – the well known Stevenson Brothers pig farmers in Essex – Oli gained the skills and confidence needed to swap a career in marketing for full-time butchery. Having found the shop for sale in February 2013 he started working with Peter James in the background to ensure a smooth transition for the business and to guarantee existing customer satisfaction. Paddy: Denmark Hill resident Paddy helped make the Proud Sow dream become a reality, when in February 2013 Oli confided in his friend about his ambition to own a butchery. So Paddy began scouring the local area looking for a suitable site and was quickly introduced to Peter who was keen to retire and knew there was only one man for the job. With his business knowledge, Paddy has helped get the new venture off the ground and remains the trusted business partner of The Proud Sow. Favourite Proud Sow product: Shoulder of lamb

Caroline: Oli's girlfriend Caroline is Head of Events and Community Fundraising at the charity Action Against Hunger but is also one of the creative brains behind The Proud Sow. A fellow foodie, Caroline is a source of inspiration for new ideas and support. She loves nothing more than popping into the shop to talk to customers and help out where she can. She has also roped in the support of friends and family for the launch – including local children's book designer Faith Booker who designed The Proud Sow logo. Josh: The Proud Sow's 2nd in command and young Butcher. He is Oli's right hand man in the shop and has completed his level two butchery qualification. Josh has been integral during the business handover as he worked under both Peter and now Oli. Favourite Proud Sow product: Pork and leek sausages

Ben: New to the team is Ben, joining the Proud Sow as it’s new apprentice. After 3 years at catering college, Ben is applying his skills to the art of butchery over the next year under the guidance of Oli and Josh. Favourite product (so far): Stuffed lamb breast

And not forgetting George and Rose: Oli and Caroline's son and daughter. Rose is already a meat connoisseur. She tastes all of Daddy's new sausage recipes and is never shy of giving her honest feedback. She is also Josh's biggest fan and enjoys nothing more than asking him lots of questions whenever she visits the shop. George is on his way to becoming part of the meat loving family, consuming all in his way. He has recently taken a liking to pulled pork! Favourite Proud Sow product: Chipolatas & Pork shoulder
